Been there.
I like to watch the news when a major event is happening. I feel like by watching something unfold it makes an impact in my mind and I have a personal interest in the event. Even if I'm not actually there (I'm usually thankful for that), just by watching I feel like I take a more personal approach to an event and like I'm a part of it--a part of the bigger world. In college, I stayed home all day on 9/11 to watch the events unfold. When Saddam Hussein's statue crumbled, I stayed home from chapel (I never missed chapel) to see what was going to happen.
Last night, I just happened to check Twitter and noticed the tag Tehran. Hmm, why are people talking about Tehran? So, I clicked on the tag and saw that something major was happening...someone wrote.."Is this the next Tiananmen Square?" Whoa! What is this?
Well, turns out that Iranians are upset about the results of the Iranian election and are rioting in the streets. The only thing is that there was NO news coverage in the US as it was unfolding. Even I checked out FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC trying to find coverage, until I saw a new Twitter tag...CNNfail. The whole unfolding of the news took place on Twitter! I rarely check Twitter, the last message I made was over a month ago, but here I was for this one source of a major event. Check out this article for more. So, later when people talk about this, I guess I'll be able to say--Been there. Done that. But, thank goodness I don't have a t-shirt.
